I joined the Irish Independent’s Indo Daily for a 29-minute guide to US-Iran relations from 1946 to the war of 2026.

I navigate from the US entry into the region, seeking to bolster Iran against the Soviet Union. That soon led to the US and the UK backing a coup in 1953 against the Mossadegh Government, which had nationalized the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company, and putting the Shah back in power.

The path takes a sharp turn in 1979, when the Islamic Revolution topples the Shah, followed by the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s and the US playing both sides with disastrous outcomes.

I follow that path through regional developments and the War on Terror after 9-11, but make sure that I emphasize what is happening inside Iran with the mass protests after the disputed 2009 Presidential election.

And then is the road to war: from the Trump camp withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear agreement with Iran to joining the Israelis last Saturday.
