Ukraine War, Day 1,332: Trump Hesitates on Tomahawk Missiles for Kyiv

I joined Times Radio’s Maddie Hale on Saturday for a 40-minute analysis of Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky’s meeting with Donald Trump in the White House, including Trump’s retreat from supplying Tomahawk missiles to Kyiv.

I look at three reasons for Trump’s wobble: 1) manipulation by Vladimir Putin in a Thursday phone call; 2) division within the Trump Administration; and 3) the reality TV star’s inability to focus on the issue.

Trump was all over the shop yesterday. The reason why we seem to get a little bit of focus on the Tomahawks is that the media brought out the key lines.

He was bashing Venezuela yesterday. He was bashing the Democrats over the Government shutdown. He was making false claims about healthcare. He was saying illegal aliens are overrunning the US.

He’s not in a very happy place. And he’s worried about the No Kings protests happening across the US later today.

I put the setback into wider context, notably that the Tomahawks remain on the table. Perhaps more importantly, Ukrainian officials were in Washington this week for advance on a range of issues, including other military supplies, drone production, sanctions against Russia, and financial support and reconstruction funds for Ukraine.

We also look at Trump’s latest feuding — and possible falsehood — over India and tariffs in part because of Indian purchases of Russian oil.
