Mamdani’s New York Win: A Template to Vanquish Destructive “Populism” in the US, UK, and Beyond

I joined the Irish Independent’s Indo Daily on Wednesday to analyze Donald Trump’s “performative cruelty”.

In the 28-minute podcast, former CNN anchor Gina London and I speak with host Kevin Doyle about the status of Trump’s Big, Not-so-Beautiful Bill and his fallout with Elon Musk.

Then we get to the cruelty. We survey Trump performing and boasting at “Alligator Alcatraz”, the detention center for 5,000 migrants and asylum seekers set up near the hot, humid swamp of the Florida Everglades. We note the wider significance of his threat to strip the US citizenship of Zohrab Mamdani: it is the leading edge of the Administration’s order to the Justice Department to “denaturalize” Americans.

We glance at Trump’s hope to be carved on Mount Rushmore along four iconic US President. And, as his golfing buddy Edward Walsh is installed as Ambassador to Ireland, we consider if it is possible to establish a productive channel with the Embassy amid Trumpian whims and threats.
