Donald Trump’s official portrait
EA on International Media: From the Capitol Attack to Trump 2.0
I joined the Irish Examiner’s Mick Clifford for a 46-minute podcast anticipating Donald Trump’s second stay in the White House.
I explain how a convicted felon and coup plotter has been able to return — legally — to power. Reviewing the status of his suspended sentence and of his three other pending felony case, I explain how Trump is still stained by the conclusion of Special Counsel Jack Smith’s report that he pursued “unprecedented criminal effort” to overturn the 2020 Presidential election.
These were legal cases. Trump got every break under the law for his defense.
This was not a man being hunted like a witch. This was a man given full protection of due process of the law, and he was still convicted of 34 felony counts in one case and condemned by a damning report in another.
I review Trump’s Cabinet nominees, selected to protect him and to bend US agencies to his will. Amid his “family and friends” Administration, I consider if there are any “adults in the room” for foreign and domestic policy.
I can read the Biden Administration because I know where they have come up through the system.
When you have not only Trump but others who are acting out of personal interest, you have to come up with a completely different approach.
We chat about Elon Musk’s unofficial role and whether he and Trump, as “narcissists, huge egos, bullies, and disruptors”, will fall out or whether they will succeed in tearing down the US system.
Then we turn to specific issues such as migrants and asylum seekers, tariffs, and — given its significance for Ireland — corporation tax.
