President Salome Zourabichvili addresses protesters at a rally in Tbilisi, Georgia, December 22, 2024

I joined Poland’s TVP World on Sunday for an analysis of the protests in Georgia, challenging the repression of the Government and claiming that recent elections were manipulated with Russian interference.

Immediately after the election, the ruling Georgian Dream party — founded by sanctioned businessman Bidzina Ivanishvili, who made his fortune in Russia — postponed any talks about accession to the European Union until 2028. It rejected concerns about the vote, and installed the far-right activist Mikheil Kavelashvili as President.

The outgoing President, Salome Zourabichvili, refused to acknowledge Kavelashvili’s legitimacy and joined thousands of protesters outside the Presidential building on Saturday.
