Q&A: Israel Kills Hamas Leader Sinwar — What Happens Next?

EA on The Tonight Show and WION: Israel-Gaza-Lebanon, 1 Year On

I spoke with Dublin NewsTalk’s Pat Kenny Show on Thursday about the state of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “open-ended” wars in Gaza and Lebanon.

Around four hours later, the news flash came that Israel’s forces killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in southern Gaza.

I mention to Pat Kenny that the one development which could end the mass killing on both fronts would be Israel’s “elimination” of Sinwar, following the assassinations of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and other Hamas and Hezbollah senior officials.

But failing that, I foresee no halt to the airstrikes and cutoff of aid threatening civilians, particularly in Gaza.

I explain why the US message giving Israel 30 days to explain its halt of aid is little more than token finger-wagging, and why only internal pressure within Israel — short of Netanyahu now declaring “victory”, even though around 100 hostages remain in Gaza — would pause military oeprations.
