ORIGINAL ENTRY, AUG 30: Iran President Masoud Pezeshkian has ordered an investigation of the police’s beating and killing of a detainee in the north of the country.

The Kurdish human rights group Hengaw said Mohammad Mirmusavi (pictured), 36, was severely beaten after his arrest in Langerud in Gilan Province last Saturday.

Mirmusavi, who had been involved in a street brawl, died three days later.

Pezeshkian ordered the enquiry after video circulated of Mirmousavi’s body with signs of severe beating and bleeding. A participant in the washing of the body said security forces injured two areas of Mirmousavi’s back and waist, while another present during the recording of the video said the detainee was tortured and beaten while his hands and feet were tied.

On Wednesday, a local prosecutor cited a “suspicious death of a suspect” without naming Mirmousavi. He announced that a special investigator has been appointed to look into the matter, and five law enforcement officers had been arrested.

Iran’s national police command said on Friday that officers exhibited a “lack of anger control” while handling the detainee. It said “friction” between Mirmousavi and officers led to his death.

The behavior of some police officers is against the professional policy of the police and is not acceptable in any way. For this reason, the above-mentioned people were placed under the jurisdiction of the judicial authority.
