I join the Irish Examiner’s Mick Clifford for a 47-minute review of the week’s events in the US, focusing on the threat of Donald Trump to the US and the world.
We begin with the shooting at the Trump rally in Pennsylvania and the Republican National Convention as Clifford asks, “Is it all over bar the shouting?”
I respond:
I would never say with any election that it’s all over — I’ve been burned predicting elections in the past — and particularly in an era where the next four months will seem like an eternity.
I also don’t want to say it’s all over because when you say that, you bake in the result and tell folks that they don’t need to vote — and that’s the Trumpist narrative right now, with the coronation of Donald up to November.
That takes me to the fundamental problem of spectacle v. issues in campaigns, and a negligent US media pushing aside the latter: “We should put talking about these on a day-to-day basis, rather than reducing this to ‘Old Joe’ or ‘Trump Has A Bandaged Ear’.”
