US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the NATO Summit, Washington D.C., July 10, 2024

I joined Times Radio’s Matt Chorley on Wednesday, just before US President Joe Biden met new UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the NATO Summit.

Amid uncertainty about Biden’s future, the threat of Donald Trump, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, I explain the fundamental necessity of Starmer showing that the post-Brexit UK can still be a “safe pair of hands” in the world.

The important thing is that Starmer and the new Government show competence and stability: on foreign policy issues, such as the Middle East and the relationship with China; on the UK’s relationship with the European Union; and, beyond that, about the British domestic front amid a turbulent period with the effects of Brexit.

I am preceded by Ukrainian journalist Katereena Malofeeyeva, who sets out Kyiv’s view of the Labour Government in London.
