Demonstrators with Palestinian and Irish flags at a rally in Cork, Iralend (Larry Cummins/Irish Examiner)
I joined Dublin NewsTalk’s Sean Moncrieff on Wednesday to analyze the significance of three more European countries — Ireland, Spain, and Norway — announcing that they will recognize the state of Palestine on May 28.
I discuss the process of recognition and how and why it occurs. I explain why we are still short of formal recognition of Palestine by the international community — including the different situations in the UN General Assembly and Security Council — amid the challenges of Israel’s open-ended war on Gaza and the governance of Palestine.
But with nine of the European Union’s 27 members now among the 140+ countries recognizing Palestine, and more EU nations likely to follow soon, I conclude that this is an important moment for Palestinians, the Middle East, and the world.
Can the editor please tell his readers why Rishi Sunak chose July 4th, independence day in the U.S, and the day before a likely run-off in the Iranian presidential election, as the date for the next General Election?
