In their renewed crackdown over compulsory hijab, Iran’s “morality police” have detained the sister of Nika Shakarami, who was killed by Iranian security forces in September 2022.

Aida Shakarami, a university student, was arrested in Tehran on Wednesday and remains in custody, her father posted on Instagram.

Nika Shakarami was 16 when she was pursued and slain by security forces during the “Woman, Life, Freedom” protests that followed the death of Mahsa Amini — who was detained and reportedly beaten by morality police in Tehran for “inappropriate attire” — in custody on September 16, 2022.

Responding to Iran’s missile and drone strikes on Israel, the US has sanctioned 16 Iranian individuals and two companies involved in drone production; five suppliers and customers of one of Iran’s largest steel producers; and an Iranian automobile company and its three subsidiaries with connections to the Revolutionary Guards and the Defense Ministry.

The US Commerce Department said it is imposing new controls to restrict Iran’s access to technologies such as basic commercial grade microelectronics.
