Donald Trump speaks at Des Moines Area Community College, Newton, Iowa, January 6, 2024 (Andrew Harnik/AP)

I joined Dublin NewsTalk’s Pat Kenny Show on Monday to evaluate the latest farce from Donald Trump: a rambling, nonsensical depiction of the US Civil War and how he would have prevented it.

Listen to Discussion from 2:28.45

I explain the significance of Trump’s nonsense: a mangling of history which tips off both his ignorance and his ego; the latent denial of race and thus of slavery as part of the Civil War; and his distortion of a 19th-century insurrection to vindicate his own in the 21st century.

And I note: despite the severity of both the assault on the past and the assault on the present, Trump’s opponents for the Republican nomination will never call him out over his lies and threats.
