On the 84th anniversary of Germany’s blitzkrieg assault on Poland, I joined TVP World to analyze the links between the start of World War II and the state of Russia’s 18-month invasion of Ukraine.

Dr Christopher Morris and I also review the Ukrainian counter-offensive, and we briefly look at Pope Francis’s trip to Mongolia.

In the context of 2023, I remember about this invasion, this “special military operation” of 1939. Hitler justified it by saying Poland was ethnically cleansing Germans and was denying Germans their rights.

Although this was untrue, there were many outside Poland and Germany who would repeat German propaganda lines, who well into the war would say that “we” must negotiate with Germany, that we had to understand that they were defending themselves.
