US Navy sailor prepare material from a suspected Chinese spy balloon, recovered off the coast of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina in the Atlantic Ocean, February 10, 2023 (Ryan Seelbach/US Navy)

I joined UK and Irish outlets on Tuesday to analyze the US downing of a Chinese spy balloon last week, the shootdowns of three other objects, and what happens next between Washington and Beijing.

In an interview with Monocle 24’s Markus Hippi, I explained why the Chinese have been using balloons for a look and listen over positions including American military bases. I damp down a bit of the excited headlines by evaluating that the case is unlikely to ratchet up US-China tensions.

And, yes, I explain that E.T. is not coming back to America.
