A child sits on a swing in front of a destroyed apartment block in Ukraine (Anna Dobrovolskaya)

As NATO leaders met in Brussels on Wednesday, I joined Beverley O’Connor on Australia’s ABC to discuss whether the organization is providing sufficient support for Ukraine to resist Russia’s invasion.

I go further in reviewing the international situation over military assistance, economic aid, and sanctions against Russia.

Publicly the NATO meeting is to show support to Ukraine.

But it’s not just symbolism. It’s what happens below the radar: what we have signals of is a ramping-up of military assistance to Ukraine; a ramping-up of economic assistance; and we’re seeing a ramping-up of sanctions on Russia.

The message: we can’t stop Vladimir Putin from continuing the attacks and, indeed, the war crimes — but we can contain Russia and gradually push this back.
