I joined Monocle 24’s Georgina Godwin on Monday to discuss US-China relations in light of President Joe Biden’s order extending the visas of Hong Kongers resident in the US.

We begin with an assessment of the Biden announcement amid China’s crackdown on political expression and rights in Hong Kong, and of China’s reaction. Then the discussion widens to other aspects of political, economic, and military relations — from confrontation to cooperation — between the two countries.

There’s little that Western countries can do with Beijing over the situation inside Hong Kong. So the extension of visas is a way to say, “Well, outside Hong Kong we can at least do this.”
