Israel and UAE officials exchange greetings, Abu Dhabi, September 1, 2020

The leaders of UAE, Bahrain, and Israel will join Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday for a photo opportunity, with each side — for domestic and regional reasons — promoting “roadmaps” to diplomatic recognition.

I joined TRT World on Tuesday to cut through the spin and get to the significance of the political maneuvers: the Israeli, UAE, and Bahraini leaders all facing domestic challenges and needing a headline “victory”; the three countries — and Saudi Arabia behind them — all seeing Turkey and Iran as threats; and the Palestinian people being cast aside once again.

What’s publicly unthinkable has privately been called diplomacy and power plays for years.
