USS Abraham Lincoln, part of a US carrier strike group which moved towards the Persian Gulf last month
I joined the BBC News Channel on Saturday afternoon to assess the possible confrontation between US and Iran.
What’s the evidence in the tanker attacks in the Gulf of Oman? Is this spiraling to military action, or does diplomacy have a chance?
There is layer on layer here. We’ve got the US-Iran tensions. We have Iran’s long-held tensions with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Israel. And no one at this point is serving as a broker to say that everyone needs to stop going on Twitter and stop making press statements that the other side is a liar and deceiver.

khamenei has cornered himelf and iran,, a military confrontation is entirely on mullahs. Trump wants to show he can make deal with iran. But that deal is too bitter for mullahs, and likely spells the end as they know it. That is at the core of it. You can go round and round about who said what but the ball is in mullahs court, but the only thing they know is thuggery, not diplomacy.
You are so correct.
Khamenei has dared to rule Iran despite USA prompting him to stand down so many times, it’s time for him (and the Iranians) to face the consequences.
