On the eve of comprehensive US sanctions, Iran’s Supreme Leader has insisted that it is America which will be defeated by his “Resistance Economy”.

Marking the takeover of the US Embassy in 1979, Ayatollah Khamenei told students:

For 40 years, the challenge between America and Iran has continued and a variety of movements have taken place from the enemy’s side – from the military and economic warfare to the media war launched by America.

The goal of the United States in all this was to regain the domination it had in the era of the tyranny, but it could not. There is an important fact here, that in this 40-year-old challenge, the American side has been defeated and the side of the Islamic Republic has been victorious.

The reason for America’s defeat is that it has started the attack but has not reached its goals.

The new US sanctions, including on the energy and financial sectors, take effect on Sunday night. They were ordered by Donald Trump in May, as he withdrew Washington from the July 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and the 5+1 Powers (US, UK, France, Germany, China, and Russia).

Iran’s oil exports have fallen 40% since April and are expected to decline farther, although the US has granted waivers to eight countries to continue some purchases from Tehran for the next four months. Tehran’s production, investment, trade, employment, and currency — troubled by long-term internal issues — will come under further pressure.

But Khamenei maintained that his “Resistance Economy”, proclaimed in 2012 amid an earlier wave of UN and US sanctions, will prevail:

America’s goal with sanctions is to cripple and hold back Iran’s economy, but the outcome is that the push toward self-sufficiency has expanded in the country. Over the years, the Iranian nation had become accustomed to importing everything, but now it is accustomed to seeking to produce everything.

In contrast, Khamenei said, the US “suffers from more than $15 trillion public debt and $800 billion budget deficit”.

The US is declining. Everyone should know this. Those who incline to compromise are making impractical plans. This decline is not related to today or yesterday; rather it is a long-lasting situation. The US is doomed to degradation and perishment.
