First we consider Jeremy Hunt’s call, during a visit to Washington, for Europe to join London and the US in more sanctions on Russia. The cause? Moscow’s purported involvement in the nerve agent attack in southern England in March, targeting former spy Sergey Skripal and his daughter Yulia.

This is not just a signal to Vladimir Putin and Russia, which is we will hold you to account. It is a signal to Europe, “We want a united front on this.”

And it’s a signal to Donald Trump, the one official in the US Government who is opposed to sanctions on his friend Vladimir.
