On Tuesday, Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani took a harder line on the July 2015 nuclear deal, warning that Tehran may leave the agreement because of new US sanctions.

Facing domestic pressure from hardliners and struggling to establish economic recovery amid the American restrictions, Rouhani said Iran can quickly return to the production of 20% enriched uranium, which it gave up under the accord.

I spoke with Monocle 24’s The Daily on Tuesday night about Rouhani’s calculations in the statement, including the Iranian regime’s attempt to split off European powers from the US.
