Amid the furor over Donald Trump’s tweet of a reworked video of his 2007 appearance on World Wrestling Entertainment — with Trump bodyslamming his “rival”, WWE Vince McMahon, whose head has been replaced by a CNN logo — I used a Monday discussion with London’s talkRADIO to make two wider points.

1. Unlike other provocative tweets by Trump, this was unlikely to be just one of his early-morning “thought bubbles”. Instead, it is likely to have been designed by White House staff — notably communications director Dan Scavino — as part of the expanding war on the media.

“If this is the case, this isn’t just simply Trump going off his head. This a White House campaign going after and trying to break the US media.”

2. But, far from seizing the initiative for Trump, the campaign is likely to just reinforce the paralysis of a White House which is unable to get any traction for major legislation such as repeal of ObamaCare, tax recoding, and passage of its budget — let alone provide for a stable foreign policy in crises from Syria to North Korea to Russia.

The discussion begins with the flutter over a White House trial balloon that Trump may make a sudden visit to UK Prime Minister Theresa May — a balloon which seems to have given 10 Downing Street the jitters.
