I spoke with BBC outlets on Wednesday about the posturing and effect of Donald Trump’s latest executive orders, from the renewal of the Keystone and Dakota Pipelines — despite the environmental risk and the crossing of sacred Native American land — to the ban on refugees from seven countries to the building of The Wall, 2,000 miles along the US-Mexican border.

Trump is trying to raise the stakes. He is looking for a showdown.

The reality is that illegal immigration into the US has decreased since 2007….The reality is that only 24 people have been killed in a terrorist attack by a foreign-born person since 2001….

Donald Trump is not proposing this from any sensible evaluation of the situation in the US. He is trying to seize upon fear and anxiety to target particular groups. The people who will be punished by this are those who have committed no crime and are not likely to commit a crime.
