I joined BBC Three Counties on Monday morning to discuss the growing problem for Republican nominee Donald Trump of his approach to taxes, given his refusal to produce returns — and the revelation of his declared loss in 1995 of almost $1 billion that may have allowed him to shelter his income from years of federal tax

The conversation then turns heated with former MEP Godfrey Bloom, as he tries to defend Trump’s behavior — bringing my response, “You can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig” — and gets a bit agitated when he is pressed about his advocacy of tax avoidance.

But almost every American pays taxes. That’s an issue where they’ll feel some type of personal connection when they listen to a man who says, “I’m brilliant because I learned to — all but say — ‘cheat’the system and the rest of you, tough luck.
