PHOTO: A tough time for both Donald Trump and the baby this week

It has been a difficult week for the Republican nominee Donald Trump in the US Presidential campaign. His poll numbers are slipping against Democratic rival Hillary Clinton; he is in a public battle with senior Republican politicians; he is embroiled in controversy over his remarks about the parents of an American Muslim soldier who died in the Iraq War; and he has thrown a baby out of a campaign rally.

But would he — as US media, fed by mischievous sources, speculated last weekend — give up the nomination? And what would the Republicans do then?

I talked about the latest developments and their significance with Monocle 24 and with BBC Radio Foyle.

Trump is close to a political headcase. He just says what he thinks and damn the consequences. He just wants to pick fights.

So will these be the fights that finally undo him?

When he went after the parents of a slain American soldier, he may have crossed a line with many Americans in the center of the political spectrum. Do you really want to attack the parents of someone who died in the service of the US military? Do you really want to take your anti-Muslim rhetoric that far?
