Two Shia mosques in Yemen’s capital Sana’a were bombed during Friday prayers, with fears of mass casualties.

Four suicide bombers detonated their explosives inside the mosques. Medical sources initially said at least 46 people were killed and 200 wounded.

A television network owned by Yemen’s Houthi faction, which is in control of Sana’a, later put the toll at 137 killed and 345 injured.

The bombings came hours after a fighter jet attacked the palace of President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi in Aden in southern Yemen.

Hadi is in a struggle for power with the Houthis, a Shia Muslim faction who took power in Sana’a last month. Hadi subsequently fled south, setting up an alternative government.

The air attack followed battles at Aden’s international airport between forces loyal to Hadi and a commander who backs the Houthis. At least six people were killed and 20 wounded in the violence.

The President, evacuated to a safe area, said the operation was an “attempted coup” against his internationally-recognized position.
