LATEST: Video — Insurgents Kill Regime Sniper in Aleppo

In their most significant attack on the Islamic State since the breakdown of a non-aggression arrangement, regime warplanes struck jihadist targets across northern and eastern Syria this weekend.

Up to 122 airstrikes were claimed. There was a concentration around Raqqa, the main city occupied by the Islamic State, with a reported 26 attacks on buildings. Attacks were also said to have taken place in Deir Ez Province in the east, and even on a jihadist position in Manbij in Aleppo Province.

A resident in Raqqa said the bombing has escalated since Wednesday: “About 30% of the strikes hit the Islamic State positions, the rest hit civilian areas.”

He claimed 16 strikes on Saturday, accompanied by artillery shelling.

Claimed footage from a Chechen account close to the Islamic State of the aftermath of the attack on Manbij, saying two women were killed:

The number of casualties is unknown, although one British-based “monitoring group” claimed at least 31 Islamic State fighters were killed and dozens wounded.

The Assad regime had refrained from attacks on the Islamic State with the jihadists battling — and weakening — insurgents since January. Even after the Islamic State turned its offensive on regime positions this summer, overrunning bases and a major gasfield, the Syrian military was limited in its response.

However, the Islamic State’s threat to the last remaining regime base in Raqqa Province at Tabqa appears to have forced Damascus’s hand, with the Assad regime fearing the effective loss of much of northern and eastern Syria to the jihadists.

The jihadists took the Syrian military’s other bases near Raqqa, including those of Division 17 and Brigade 93, in the past two months.

State news agency SANA says nothing about the airstrikes, preferring instead to headline the visit of Defense Minister Fahd Jassem al-Freij to Mleiha, the town near Damascus captured from insurgents last week.
