Even as ceremonies were starting, State media were putting out the message, “Millions of Iranians Marking 1979 Islamic Revolution Anniversary“.

Here are five stories, from EA sources and other Iranian outlets, beyond the expected headlines:

1. TURNOUT IS UP THIS YEAR — BUT WHY?

The number of people in the Tehran march was larger than recent years.

Why? Possibly because of requests by reformists, after years of repression by the regime, to participate in the celebration.

Former President Rafsanjani and his family also participated, bringing shouts from the crowd, “Greetings to Hashemi (Rafsanjani), Salam to Rouhani”

2. NOT ALL REFORMISTS WERE WELCOMED

Some reformists had an unexpected setback for their enthusiasm. About 12 young marchers, carrying banners with the images of Rouhani, Rafsanjani, and former President Mohammad Khatami, were arrested.

Some of the detainees were later released.

3. MAHMOUD’S BACK

Former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad also showed up in the march. A group of people welcomed him with hostile chants until they were dispersed by his bodyguards and police.

4. THE TROUBLEMAKERS

A small group of demonstrators shouted, “Death to those against velayat-e faqih (the Iranian system of clerical supremacy).” They allegedly then attacked Rafsanjani supporters.

5. “EXECUTE MOUSAVI, KARROUBI, AND KHATAMI”

Another group of marchers carried banners calling for the execution of 2009 Presidential candidates Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi — both under strict house arrest since February 2011 — and former President Khatami.

Witnesses said nearby police did not intervene.
