Russian airstrikes have killed more than 50 people and injured more than 170 in Idlib city in northwest Syria on Sunday.

Russia’s warplanes have regularly bombed opposition-held Idlib Province amid attacks which have killed almost 1,000 civilians since September 30; however, today’s toll from five airstrikes is one of the deadliest in the provincial capital.

Idlib’s director of water and sanitary engineering, Samir Sweid, and a White Helmets ambulanceman are among the dead. A correspondent for Al Jazeera Live has been injured.

Airstrikes have also been reported on rebels surrounding the regime enclaves of al-Fu’ah and Kafraya, north of Idlib city.

The Russian attacks come as a foreign-led regime offensive is attacking Khan Touman in neighboring Aleppo Province. Success would put regime forces on the Aleppo-to-Damascus highway, threatening the rebel supply line between Idlib and Aleppo, and the border of Idlib Province.

Pro-regime outlets are claiming that Lebanon’s Hezbollah, among the foreign fighters leading the attacks, has already raised its flag in Khan Touman.
