Independent Russian outlet Mediazona and BBC Russian have confirmed the identities of 248,844 Russian military personnel killed in Ukraine.

Another 6,097 names have been added since late August. The confirmed death toll include 7,656 officers.

The journalists note that the actual figures are likely significantly higher.

ORIGINAL ENTRY: In drone strikes close to the Ukraine-Poland border, Russia almost hit trains carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, US General David Petraeus, and former Swedish Prime minister Carl Bildt.

The Russians struck a Kyiv-Warsaw passenger train just behind a diplomatic train with Bildt; Johnson, who was the UK leader from 2019 to 2022; and security advisers from several European Union states. Petraeus, who commanded US forces in Iraq and later was CIA Director, was aboard another train at the Yagodyn station.

There were no casualties from the assault just 2 km from the Polish border.

Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said in Kyiv. “This was just a few hundred meters from the Polish border, this affects the safety of my countrymen.”

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk chaired an emergency meeting in Warsaw after the strikes. He said he expected Russia to escalate attacks “in the coming weeks”.

The escalation of actions of the Russian Federation is becoming a fact and its examples are getting closer and closer to our borders.

What can be expected is that the next weeks and months will be a period of very intensive actions from the Russian side. Unfortunately, we cannot rule out that this escalation will also concern our territory.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said Moscow had “deliberately” struck the locomotive.

It is precisely to prevent these strikes from spreading further into Europe that Ukrainian men and women fight every day, give their lives, and do not allow the aggression to expand.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said the attack was “Putin’s terror knocking directly on the doors of the EU and NATO”.
