For the 250th anniversary of the US, UCD’s Clinton Institute and EA WorldView have produced Ireland and the Making of America, an 8-episode VideoCast.
In the third episode, literary scholar and author Mary Burke of the University of Connecticut speaks with Liam Kennedy about the significance of Irish-American literature.
Mary explores how Irish-American writing has reflected changing ideas of identity, belonging, and race across generations. She considers the journey from forgotten writers of the 18th century to F. Scott Fitzgerald and Margaret Mitchell in the 20th century, examining how literature reveals the complexity and diversity of Irish America.
And she explains why it is time to rethink what we mean by “Irish-American writing”.
