I joined Canadian and British media on Wednesday to analyze King Charles III’s highly successful visit to Washington, with a deftly political speech before Congress and a State Dinner that continued the essential diplomacy.
I explain how Charles kept Donald Trump star-struck while emphasizing the importance of the US-UK relationship, the US-Europe partnership, and NATO to an Administration which has no belief in alliances. He emphasized the importance of the environment to Trumpists tearing its up, invoked the Magna Carta to call for curbs on executive power, and called for American actions as well as values. He even used Britain’s burning of the White House in 1814 to get in a jab at Trump’s destruction of the building for his ballroom in 2026.

In a chat with the CBC, I note how Charles “played a blinder” making key points implicitly or indirectly: “I’m not sure that Trump even knew the King was jabbing.”
This idea of America First should not be America Alone — he said it with a nicer tone and far more status than I have.
So Donald Trump, who would like to be a king, won’t push back. King Charles may have been one of the few people in the world who could get away with this.
I also focus on the UK’s position in the US-Israel War on Iran, explaining how the Starmer Government has successfully avoided support of American offensive operations.
