In a significant week for the world, with leaders acknowledging the Trump camp’s ending of the post-1945 international order, I spoke with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on Friday about the role of Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney.
At the Davos World Economic Forum, a series of European leaders declared the need to move away from US leadership because of the Trumpian rejection of alliances. However, it was Carney who took the spotlight with his calm but effective description of the task ahead: “If you are not at the table, you are on the menu.”
I evaluate both the Davos speech and Carney’s address on Thursday, calling on Canadians of all backgrounds to pursue the future with unity, values, and dedication.
I begin with Donald Trump’s tantrum, withdrawing the invitation to Canada to join his “Board of Peace” — after Carney had already rebuffed the approach.
Then I cut to the chase:
This was a catalytic week when not just Canada but European countries effectively said that the old international order is not just damaged, it’s gone — in large part because of what we are seeing in Washington.
The economic, political, and military relationships have to be forged without going first to the US because you have key players in the Trump Administration who do not see Canada and Europe as allies but as potential or actual adversaries.
