EA on Al Arabiya: Mamdani Outmaneuvers Trump
In Search of Conviction: Why the UK Can’t Produce A Mamdani (Yet)
I joined Times Radio on Thursday morning, a few hours after the midnight inauguration of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in the former City Hall subway station.
I analyze a “rising political star” and, more importantly, the prospects for his economic and social welfare policies, such as free child care and transport, assistance with rents, and support for neighborhood grocery stores.
I highlight the realities — costs, revenues from increased taxes, and the need to work with the New York State Government and legislatures. I dispel the myths, such as mass flight of the wealthy and corporations from the city.
And I highlight the need to consider Mamdani as part of a wider examination of Democrats amid the Trump-fueled crisis for the US.
Mamdani fits New York City. You are going to need Democrats in Texas, in California, in Arizona, and elsewhere that fit the needs of those people.
It won’t all be the progressivism of Mamdani. Democrats need a big tent for the priority issues of economy, health care, and just having a decent politics rather than the form practiced by Donald Trump.
