Mamdani’s New York Win: A Template to Vanquish Destructive “Populism” in the US, UK, and Beyond

In a 19-minute podcast, I join Dublin NewsTalk’s The Daily to analyze Zohran Mamdani, the 34-year-old activist who might become Mayor of New York City; the issues in next Tuesday’s election; and the significance for an America trying to deal with Trump-era destruction.

I consider Mamdani’s rise, with an emphasis on “unity” across ethnic, racial, and religious lines in dealing with economic and social lines. I evaluate his campaign’s success with social media to energize voters as well as community organizations.

Looking at the alternative of former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo, I explain to host Shane Beatty that this could be a defining moment in a transition from “old guard” Democrats to a new politics for the city, the state, and the nation.

Will the Democratic Party return to the long-time establishment that they know, even if it is tainted by Cuomo’s personal affairs? Or do they go with this progressive alternative?

And it becomes a national issue because the Trumpists are trying everything they can to tear down Mamdani.
