EA on TVP World: Will Trump Send Tomahawk Missiles to Ukraine?
Tuesday’s Coverage: Zelensky to Meet Trump on Friday
UPDATE 0958 GMT:
The largest oil depot in Russian-occupied Crimea is still burning, with 16 damaged fuel tanks, after a Ukrainian drone strike on Monday.
Ukraine’s General Staff said a “large-scale fire is ongoing on the territory of the [Feodosia] enterprise”.
Witnesses said on Tuesday that the blaze was visible from 25 km (15.5 miles) away.
The Feodosia terminal, about 259 km (155 miles) from the frontline, stores up to 250,000 tons of fuel. Damage to its operations exacerbates the rationing of gasoline in the occupied area, as well as in Russia’s Far East amid shortages across the country.
UPDATE 0544 GMT:
The International Monetary Fund has again lowered its forecast for Russian growth in 2025, projecting an expansion of only 0.6%.
In April the IMF estimated 1.5% growth in GDP. In July they revised the projection to 0.9%.
Fueled by wartime expenditure, the Russian economy expanded 4.3% in 2024.
The Fund maintained forecasts of 1% GDP growth for Russia in 2026 and 1.1% in 2030.
The IMF projected Russian inflation will rise to 9% this year, more than double the global average of 4.2%, before easing to 5.2% in 2026.
ORIGINAL ENTRY: Continuing his rhetorical shift over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Donald Trump said on Tuesday that Vladimir Putin “has got to settle this war” because it has been a costly failure for the Kremlin.
At a White House press conference with Argentina’s President Javier Milei, Trump said Putin “should have won that war in one week” but the invasion will soon enter its fourth year. He claimed that Russia has “lost a million and a half soldiers” killed and wounded, which is “making (Putin) look very bad”.
Trump also praised Kyiv: “Who would think that Ukraine could have fought Russia for four years to essentially a standstill?” He pointed to Russia’s economic difficulties amid Ukraine’s strikes on oil refineries, gas pipelines, railway lines, and factories supporting the invasion.
You know they have long lines waiting for gasoline in Russia right now….All of a sudden his economy is going to collapse and I’d like to see him do well.
I mean, I had a very good relationship with Vladimir Putin, but he just doesn’t want to end that war.
On Friday, Trump will host Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky. Talks are expected to focus on air defenses, US assistance to protect Ukraine’s electricity and gas networks, and American provision of Tomahawk cruise missiles for long-range strikes inside Russia.
Since a Zelensky-Trump conversation in July, the US has been providing intelligence for the strikes. The Administration is still deliberating over the Tomahawks, which have a precision-strike range of up to 1,600 km (994 miles).
US-Ukraine Discussions on Sanctions and Reconstruction
A Ukraine delegation led by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko began talks in Washington Tuesday.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declared that the US will work with G7 partners to toughen sanctions on Russia, including measures against countries that purchase Russian oil.
Meeting Putin in Alaska on August 15, Trump backed away from his deadline to impose direct sanctions on Moscow. Instead, the Administration has escalated tariffs to 50% on India, the second-largest customer for Moscow’s energy exports.
Bessent praised Kyiv’s support for the US-Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund, based on exploitation of Ukrainian rare earth minerals, for recovery and the rebuilding of Ukrainian infrastructure.
The Ukrainian delegation also includes the Secretary of the National Security Council, Rustem Umerov, and Presidential Chief of Staff Andrii Yermak.
I'd like to thank U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent for his continued support and constructive discussions.
