I joined Dublin NewsTalk’s The Hard Shoulder on Thursday to analyze the Trump Administration’s latest crackdown on US media, forcing the removal from the air of late-night TV talk show host Jimmy Kimmel.
I put the cancellation in the context of the Administration’s wannabe authoritarianism, trying to break the media and any criticism of its quest.
There is a hypocrisy with the politicization of “free speech”. On the one hand, the Trump Administration will shout “free speech” if they want to remove any restrictions on what they say, no matter how disruptive, no matter how inflammatory.
On the other hand, once it’s a matter of those who might criticize the President or who might provide statements and facts, then those people must be threatened, must be punished, must be sacked.
The Trump Administration has said they will go after academics, lawyers, the media, anyone they felt was an “enemy within”.
You break the media to expand your power. Some might call it the vestiges of a “wannabe authoritarian”.
The other guest is Harry Browne of Technological University Dublin. The host is Kieran Cuddihy.
