Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has posted after hosting Finnish counterpart Alexander Stubb:

Everything indicates that the launch of Russian drones into Polish territory through the airspace of Ukraine and Belarus was deliberate and by no means accidental. Unfortunately, Russia retains the ability to continue and expand its aggression.

Strong steps are needed – not only from Europe – strong pressure that will truly limit the potential of Russian warmongering.

In a separate post, Zelensky noted that the EU is preparing its 19th sanctions package:

Priorities include Russia’s banking sector, banks in third countries that continue trading with Russia, and the “shadow fleet” infrastructure that funds Russia’s war budget: ship captains, insurers, oil terminals, and market operators enabling Russian schemes.

UPDATE 1206 GMT:

At least three civilians were killed and at least 25 injured by Russian attacks across Ukraine over the past day.

Air defenses intercepted 62 of 66 drones launched by Russia overnight. The other four attack drones struck three locations.

In the Donetsk region in the east, two people were slain and 11 injured. In the Zaporizhzhia region in the south, one was killed and three wounded.

Casualties were also reported in the Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv, and Kherson regions.

Poland’s Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has commented in a radio interview about Russia’s drone incursion and invasion of Ukraine:

This is a colonial war. Historically speaking, such wars usually lasted about a decade.

[Vladimir] Putin will move toward peace when he realizes that he cannot win it at an acceptable cost, and he still believes he is winning.

That is why talk of reaching an agreement with him in fact prolongs the war, because it reinforces Putin’s belief that he can achieve politically what his army is unable to achieve in Ukraine.

He emphasized Putin is “waging a hybrid war across all of Europe”: “His goals, I believe, are more ambitious than some people think. He not only wants to dominate Ukraine, but also to push the United States out of Europe and divide the alliance.”

Poland has banned drone flights and restricted flights along its eastern border.

General aviation, mainly small and recreational aircraft and helicopters, can operate during the day of they have a radio and transponder. They cannot fly at night.<-p>

Flights will be permitted up to 3 km (1.86 miles) above ground level below the normal altitude of commercial flights.

Poland has asked NATO allies to provide additional air defense systems and counter-drone technology amid Russia’s drone incursion on Wednesday.

The Netherlands has announced that it will send Poland two Patriot air defense systems, counter-drone equipment, and 300 troops by the end of 2025. The Czech Government has pledged three Mi-171Sh helicopters. UK Defense Secretary John Healey said London is assessing its support with an official saying Britain is considering the return of some of the six Typhoon fighter jets stationed in Poland until six weeks ago as part of NATO’s air policing mission.

UPDATE 0644 GMT:

Former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych has lost his court case trying to overturn European Union sanctions.

In an 18-page judgement, the EU’s General Court ruled that the bloc had sufficient grounds to impose restrictions, including a travel ban and asset freeze. Yanukovych’s actions as President “clearly contributed to the destabilization” of Ukraine, the court found.

The judges also noted his failure “to distance himself effectively from the Russian authorities” and cited his “involvement in a plan” to oust Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky in March 2022, weeks after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion.

Yanukovych left office and fled to Russia in February 2014 amid the EuroMaidan rising against corruption and for political rights and justice.

On Wednesday, Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation named senior Russian officials as suspects in the killing of EuroMaidan protesters.

The director of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), Alexander Bortnikov; Russian Internal Affairs Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev; and their subordinates are under investigation.

“The Russians personally visited the central districts of Kyiv, in particular Independence Square, assessed the situation on the spot and further adjusted…the operational plan of neutralizing protest actions with the forceful dispersal of demonstrators,” the Bureau said.

Russian officials who visited Kyiv illegally provided grenades intended to suppress the EuroMaidan protests, it added. The Russian officials also suggested deploying additional “Berkut” riot police and internal troops.

A Ukrainian drone damaged a Russian warship off in Novorossiysk Bay in southern Russia on Wednesday.

Russia has moved most of its Black Sea Fleet to its waters after Ukrainian strikes decimated much of it during Moscow’s invasion.

“As a result of the strike, the Russian vessel’s electronic intelligence systems were destroyed, and the ship was disabled and sent for costly repairs,” said the Ukrainian military intelligence service HUR.

India’s customers of Russian oil are seeking larger discounts because of the risk of toughened sanctions, say oil industry analysts.

India is facing 50% tariffs from the Trump Administration, in part because of oil purchases. From October, the European Union is lowering the international price cap on Russian maritime oil exports from $60 to $47.60 per barrel.

Some industry sources said Russian sellers are responding to the Indian demands by threatening to send oil cargoes to China.

India’s purchases of Russian oil have soared during Moscow’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. It is now the second-largest customer after the Chinese.

ORIGINAL ENTRY: Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has said “strong countermeasures are vital” after Russia’s drone incursion into Poland early Wednesday.

Polish officials reported 19 crossings by the drones, some of them Gerbera “decoy” UAVs. Three were confirmed to have been shot down, and a fourth is believed to have been intercepted.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk told Parliament, “There is no reason to claim that we are in a state of war.…but the situation is significantly more dangerous than all previous ones. He said the prospect of a large military conflict is “closer than at any time since World War II”.

For the first time, NATO forces were directly involved in operations to counter Russia during its 42 1/2-month full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Italy, the Netherlands, and the US aided the tracking and downing of the drones, which was enabled by German air defense systems.

In his nightly address to the nation, Zelensky said:

Russia has not faced a tough reaction from global leaders to what the Russians are doing – a reaction with actions. There are more than enough statements, but there is still a shortage of actions.

The Russians are testing the limits of what is possible. Testing reactions. Watching closely how NATO armed forces act – what they can do and what they cannot do yet.

The President said Ukraine had offered Poland technology, crew training, and necessary intelligence data. However, “only united European forces can give real protection”.

He also noted the joint Zapad military exercises between Russia and Belarus close to the borders with NATO members, and Moscow’s “disinformation campaign targeting both Poland and Ukraine”.
