Donald Trump and Jeffrey Epstein at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida in 1992
EA on Anton Savage Show: Can Courts Check Trump’s Economic Chaos?
I joined Times Radio’s Trump Report for a 24-minute chat about a wannabe authoritarian — Donald Trump — and the real authoritarian, China’s Xi Jinping, propping up his counterparts Russia’s Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s Kim Jong-un.
Host Fergus Macphee and I begin with Trump’s renewed difficulties over the files of the late Jeffrey Epstein. I analyze how the Justice Department’s ostensible release of 33,000 files — in fact, a recycling of material which is already in the public domain — is likely to put Trump in a “no man’s land”: returning the issue of his relationship with Epstein to the headlines, but failing to satisfy those who want a full release of the paedophile’s documents.
Trump can get away with his nonsense lying about the economy, lying about social issues, lying about his attempt to use the military to control American streets — but he can’t get away lying about Epstein.
Trump probably is beyond accountability with the mainstream media. He’s not beyond accountability with the people who have bought into his lies for so long.
And we’re at the demented Wizard of Oz moment: if his supporters pull back the curtain and see a relatively tiny man who has made himself look big by telling taller and taller tales — that will be a problem moment for The Donald.
We then chat about the dramatic headlines of Xi hosting Putin and Kim in Beijing. Far from being the dawn of a strategic axis of equals, it is a Chinese leader — for the moment — promoting cooperation with two men whose countries are struggling.
Putin and Kim are like two one-legged guys trying to stand upright by leaning on each other, and Xi is behind him saying, “Hey, I’ll give you a lift.”
As Trump’s lie are more and more outrageous, I consider whether they are a sign of mental decline or just a man who believes that no one can hold him accountable for anything he does or says.
