Ukraine War, Day 1,286: US Treasury Secretary — All Sanctions Options on Table Because of Russia’s Bombing

EA on Ukraine’s War and Politics 24: Can Russia’s Invasion Be Broken?

I joined Poland’s TVP World on Tuesday to analyze the state of Europe’s planning for Ukraine’s security after an end to Russia’s invasion.

The 14-minute conversation begins with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s statement on Monday of a “clear road map” and “an agreement in the White House”. She spoke of potentially tens of thousands of European-led troops, supported by American command and control systems and intelligence and surveillance assets.

I consider the state of the discussion between European, Ukrainian, and American militaries and politicians. I explain why Germany has pushed back against Von der Leyen for publicizing the possible arrangements.

And I emphasize that while the guarantees are important, there are the immediate issues of defense of Ukraine against air and ground attacks and of sanctions and other economic presure on Russia.

We are moving towards security guarantees, but it will take time.
