Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky (R) with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Kyiv, August 24, 2025

I joined the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on Sunday, as Prime Minister Mark Carney met President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, to analyze the Canadian support for Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s invasion.

I put the visit and the pledge of another C$2 billion (US$1.45 billion) of military aid into the context of “a marathon, not a sprint” as the Kremlin continues to reject a ceasefire and repeats its ultimata for Ukraine’s capitulation. I note that Canada is likely to join security guarantees for Kyiv, amid the uncertainty over the Trump Administration’s position.

I think this is the greatest change in European affairs since the end of the Cold War, and Canada has a part in that.
