Donald Trump and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni
UPDATE 1947 GMT:
I spoke with Firstpost on Tuesday afternoon about the opening of the NATO Summit in Ankara, setting out its aims and assessing if it can achieve them despite the unstable ego of Donald Trump.
I explain how NATO leaders are likely to handle Trump, how he has isolated himself with threats and insults — including of former allies like Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni — and how European security and support of Ukraine against Russia’s invasion are still paramount.
ORIGINAL ENTRY, JULY 7: EA’s David Dunn chatted with India’s Firstpost on Monday about the threat from Donald Trump’s attempted bullying of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni as a NATO summit convenes in Ankara.
Embarrassed by a video showing Meloni making a serious point to him at last month’s G7 summit, Trump tried to humiliate her. He lied that she had “begged” him for a photo opportunity.
Meloni not only stood firm but put Trump on the defensive with a viral video in which she emphasized, “Neither I nor Italy beg.”
David summarizes the episode and also consider other possible Trump disruptions to the NATO summit, amid the Russian threat to European security and Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
