EA on TVP World: The Munich Security Conference and Trump’s Threat to Europe
I joined Al Jazeera English’s Inside Story to analyze how the Trump camp, rejecting the post-1945 US-European alliance, is trying to break up the European Union and undermine the continent’s governments in favor of “white nationalist” movements.
The panel is based on two addresses from this weekend’s Munich Security Conference declaring that the old international order is gone. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called for a repair of trans-Atlantic relations. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, albeit more politely than Vice President J.D. Vance a year ago, reiterated the Trump camp’s demands for dominance and their falsehoods over immigration and climate change.
I challenge the Trump cheerleader Chet Love over his polemic, claiming that Trump is being victimized by “liberals”. The other contributor is Beijing-based analyst Einar Tangen.
Yes, the post-1945 rules-based international order is gone. In part, that is because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. In part, there are issues over China and its vision of an alternative system.
But in large part, it is because the Trump camp don’t believe in alliances….
Trump and his camp are trying to bully Europe into submission because they want dominance. Therefore, you have the tariffs. You have the threats against international organizations.
In response, we are going to have realignments.
