Saturday’s Coverage: Zelensky — “We Need A System of Collective Defense”

UPDATE 1236 GMT:

More than 1,000 buildings in Kyiv are still without heat following Russia’s missile and drone strikes early Friday.

Heating was knocked out in around 6,000 apartment buildings across Kyiv, nearly half of the city’s total, by the attacks.

Water supply has been restored, said Mayor Vitali Klitschko: “However, the energy supply situation in the capital remains very difficult. Electricity is crucial for the operation of both heating and water supply systems.”

In parts of the city east of the Dnipro River, electricity was available for only about 5 of the past 72 hours.

UPDATE 1110 GMT:

Power has been restored in areas of the Zaporizhzhia and Dnipropetrovsk regions blacked out by overnight Russian strikes.

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky commented:

Over the course of this week, Russia launched almost 1,100 attack drones against Ukraine, more than 890 guided aerial bombs, and over 50 missiles of various types – ballistic, cruise, and even the Oreshnik medium-range ballistic missile.

And they struck targets that have no military purpose whatsoever – energy infrastructure, residential buildings. They deliberately waited for freezing weather to make things worse for our people. This is deliberate, cynical Russian terror specifically against civilians.

UPDATE 0806 GMT:

At least five civilians have been murdered and at least 24 injured by Russian attacks across Ukraine over the past day.

Air defenses downed 125 of 154 drones launched by Russia overnight, with 22 UAVs hitting 18 locations.

Four people were slain and 10 wounded in the Donetsk region in the east.

One civilian was killed and 3 injured in the Dnipropetrovsk region in south-central Ukraine.

Casualties were also recorded in the Kharkiv, Kherson, and Chernihiv regions.

UPDATE 0802 GMT:

Ukraine’s General Staff have confirmed a drone attack on the Zhutovskaya oil depot in Russia’s Volgograd region early Saturday.

Russian authorities reported a fire at an oil facility in the area, saying it was started by debris from a downed drone.

The Ukrainian military said it also hit a drone storage facility in the Russian-occupied part of the Zaporizhzhia region in southern Ukraine, and a drone command and control point near embattled Pokrovsk in the east.

Russia hit 20 residential buildings and the Qatari Embassy early Friday. At least four civilians were murdered, including a paramedic. Another 25 people were injured, including four emergency personnel.

Amid freezing temperatures, power was cut to around 500,000 people.

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko posted on Saturday about efforts to restore heating, hoping it would be completed by the end of the day. “The situation with electricity remains more challenging,” she said, with emergency outages on the left bank of the Dnipro River.

We are doing everything possible to increase the volume of electricity supply as quickly as possible. The necessary coordination has been carried out with generating companies and all relevant services. The government is providing full necessary support.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirmed that the UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the Russian attacks, including the firing of a hypersonic Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile on Lviv in western Ukraine.

Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres, said the attacks “have resulted in significant civilian casualties and deprived millions of Ukrainians of essential services, including electricity, heating and water at a time of acute humanitarian need”.
