UPDATE: Syria’s Government Takes Control of Kurdish Areas in North

Amid clashes between Government troops and the US-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces in northern Syria, I joined a panel on Al Jazeera English’s Inside Story to assess the situation.

We detail the Government’s rapid advance in the past week, pushing the SDF across the Euphrates River and into the “Kurdish heartland” in the northeast. I lay out the political and military issues and the possible path for resolution.

Illustrating the challenges, sharply differing points of view are offered by the pro-Government Omar Abu Layla and by academic Kamaran Palani from Iraqi Kurdistan.
