UPDATE, JAN 27:

I rejoined Times Radio’s Trump Report, this time with Maddie Hale, on Tuesday to take a deeper look at how the Trump camp has been put on the defensive over the execution of Alex Pretti.

I explain how the Trumpist declaration of Pretti as a “domestic terrorist” and “would-be assassin” backfired, alienating Americans and drawing criticism from some Republican legislators.

I note the Trumpists trying to get some breathing space with the withdrawal of Border Patrol head Gregory Bovino from Minnesota, and with Donald Trump’s calls with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey.

However, I warn that the authoritarian regime is unlikely to back away from its assault, not only in Minnesota but in other parts of the US.

These “shock troops” do not have legal authority and they do not have legal accountability.

Until you deal with those problems, you have an authoritarianism which is operating outside the US system and how it is supposed to function.

ORIGINAL ENTRY, JAN 26:

I joined Times Radio’s Trump Report on Monday to analyze the execution of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis by the Trump Administration’s “shock troops” of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and of Border Patrol.

Host Jo Crawford and I set the killing in the context of an authoritarian regime. Just as ICE and Border Patrol are operating beyond legal authority and accountability. so the Administration recognizes no limits on its executive power.

Given the Trump camp’s quest to break the US system in the gravest peacetime crisis since 1865, what can be done?

If an authoritarian regime ever has to retreat on exercising unlimited authority, then it shows that it can be checked, that others have a role in the system.

So the regime’s idea will be keep pushing, keep pushing harder.
