UPDATE 0852 GMT:

Power was knocked out in part of the Belgorod region in western Russia after one of Moscow’s fighter jets accidentally dropped a bomb near an electricity substation.

Russia’s warplanes have released 133 bombs on Russian-controlled border territory since the beginning of 2025.

Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov confirmed the power outage because of “the arrival of an unidentified munition”. He said one person was injured.

UPDATE 0849 GMT:

Ukraine’s air defenses intercepted 175 of 241 drones and four of five missiles launched by Russia overnight.

Sixty-five UAVs struck 14 locations.

ORIGINAL ENTRY: Russia has launched a widespread attack on central Ukraine, targeting civilian sites in the city of Kremenchuk.

Explosions began around 1:30 a.m. as Ukraine’s Air Force warned of the barrage of approaching missiles and drones. Several Kinzhal hypersonic missiles were among the incoming munitions.

Kremenchuk Mayor Vitaliy Maletsky reported disruptions to electricity, water, and heating supply in parts of the city. Crews are working to restore critical services.

No information has been disclosed about casualties. Maletsky urged citizens to remain in safe places.

Kremenchuk, on the banks of the Dnieper River in the Poltava region, had a pre-invasion population of 215,000. The city is around 250 km (155 miles) southeast of Kyiv.

Explosions were also heard in the city of Fastiv in the Kyiv region, a day after Russia targeted energy and rail infrastructure across Ukraine.

Fastiv’s main train station was struck early Saturday. Eight people were injured in the Kyiv, Lviv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

Zelensky: “Russia’s Aim is to Inflict Suffering”

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky posted of the Russian assault with more than 700 drones and missiles on Saturday:

Russia’s aim is to inflict suffering on millions of Ukrainians, and they stoop so low as to launch missiles at peaceful cities on St. Nicholas Day. That is exactly why additional pressure is needed. Sanctions must work, and so must our air defenses, which means we must maintain support for those defending lives.

The Russian assault comes only five days after Vladimir Putin conferred in the Kremlin with Donald Trump’s envoys, real estate developer Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Zelensky posted about discussions from Thursday to Saturday between Trump’s envoys — who have worked with Russia on a 28-point ultimatum for Moscow’s seizure of territory and terms weakening the rest of Ukraine — and Rustem Umerov, the head of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council.

Ukraine is determined to keep working in good faith with the American side to genuinely achieve peace. We agreed on the next steps and formats for talks with the United States….

I am now awaiting Rustem Umerov and General Hnatov with a detailed in person report. Not everything can be discussed over the phone, so we need to work closely with our teams on ideas and proposals.

French President Emmanuel Macron condemned Russia’s “escalatory path” while trying to get Trump Administration support for the defense of Kyiv:

We will continue these efforts with the Americans to provide Ukraine with security guarantees, without which no robust and lasting peace will be possible. We must continue to exert pressure on Russia to compel it to choose peace.

Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer will confer with Zelensky in London on Monday.
