Russia’s latest missiles and drone attacks have cut supplies of water and energy in Ukraine’s capital Kyiv.
Twelve people were injured, with eight hospitalized, as the assault targeted critical infrastructure. The Russians also murdered a 7-year-old boy and wounded three people in the Zaporizhzhia region in southern Ukraine.
Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said power cuts and disruptions to water affected districts on the east bank of the Dnipro River.
The Russians set alight buildings, including a high-rise apartment blocks. Videos showed firefighters trying to contain the blazes.
“The capital of the country is under an enemy ballistic missile attack and a massive attack by the enemy strike drones,” the Ukraine Air Force announced, urging people to remain in shelters.
Energy Minister Svitlana Grynchuk said Russian forces were “inflicting a massive strike”:
Energy experts are taking all necessary measures to minimise negative consequences.
As soon as safety conditions allow, energy experts will begin clarifying the consequences of the attack and conducting restoration work.
In Zaporizhzhia, utility lines and part of the heating system were damaged. Officials said restoration could take several days.
Russians Aim “To Break Our Spirit”
Two Ukrainian officials said this week that Russian attacks had disabled almost 60% of Ukraine’s gas production. Meetings with international partners had informed them of the situation.
Ukraine has increased imports of gas by 30% to deal with immediate shortages.
Serhii Koretskyi, chief executive of State gas company Naftogaz, noted the increase in the scale of Moscow’s strikes, with hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles on an almost nightly basis.
He said the Kremlin’s goal is “to break our spirit”: “This has nothing to do with military needs, none of these assets have any military value at all.”
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky explained, “Russia’s task is to create chaos and apply psychological pressure on the population through strikes on energy facilities and railways.”
