Finnish troops open the NATO Northern Command for Land Forces headquarters in Mikkeli, October 3, 2025 (Scandinavian News Agency)

Ukraine War, Day 1,320: Zelensky — “Zero Real Reaction” To Russian Drone and Missile Strikes

I joined India’s WION on Monday to analyze NATO’s establishment of a command center in Mikkeli, Finland, around 140 km (87 miles) from the Russian border.

I cut through Russian propaganda, amplified on social media, that the Northern Command for land forces is an expansion of NATO’s “threat” to Moscow. I note that the headquarters will have just 10 staff to begin, and will reach a total of 50.

I set this in the context of Finland’s accession to NATO in April 2023, a move spurred by Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. I add the past and recent development of Russian “hybrid warfare”, including drone and fighter jet overflights from Poland to Estonia.

I also discuss the current situation in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in the ground and on the air, on both sides of the border.
