Ukraine War, Day 1,293: US-Europe Meeting on Sanctions v. Russia
I joined Times Radio’s Frontline on Monday for a 27-minute deep dive into the latest situation in Ukraine, from the battlefield to Russia’s record drone and missile strikes to the possibility of toughened sanctions on Moscow over its 42 1/2-month full-scale invasion.
Host Philip Ingram and I evaluate how, amid only a gradual advance in eastern Ukraine, Vladimir Putin is stepping up the attempt to break the country’s civilians through the aerial attacks.
If Vlad and the boys thought they were winning in Donetsk, they wouldn’t be running the record drone and missile attacks on the rest of Ukraine. They wouldn’t need to.
But that raises a difficulty for the Kremlin: as it tries to inflict death on destruction on civilians, it opens up the possibility that Ukraine, European allies, and some US officials can get Donald Trump to support the additional sanctions.
And, meanwhile, Ukraine’s strikes inside Russia on oil refineries and other key facilities supporting the invasion are increasing in number and effectiveness.
